Final meeting: Thursday 26th April 1827
Very early records indicate that racing took place in the Northumbrian village of Beadnell in March 1667. Today the village has a population of barely 500 and is situated some 4 miles south-east of Bamburgh. Nearby Beadnell Bay is a sandy beach which attracts holidaymakers in the summer, and it was here that those early races were staged. The meeting took place on Thursday 17th March 1667 and a letter still exists to this day which shows a jockey seeking permission to ride a horse owned by Laurence Gibson at Beadnell races. The only other report of racing in Beadnell was for a meeting held on Thursday 26th April 1827 when IOU, owned by Mr Boag, captured the 3 mile Plate after which racing was transferred to nearby Belford. |
